Plan on at least 1.25 inches of cupola width for every foot of unbroken roofline.
So if your garage has a 24-foot ridge, you'll want a cupola that's at least 30 inches wide at the base. A 40-foot barn? Look for something in the 48- to 50-inch range. This ratio keeps the cupola proportional to the building beneath it, which is what makes a roofline feel "finished" rather than decorated.
For larger structures, you can also round up. A slightly bigger cupola almost always looks better than a slightly smaller one — distance has a way of shrinking things, and what looks generous on the ground often looks just right from the curb.
One Cupola or Three? Sizing Long Barns
Long barns and outbuildings present a fun twist. Once a roofline stretches past 40 feet or so, a single cupola — even a properly sized one — can start to look lonely. That's where multiple cupolas come in. Three smaller cupolas spaced evenly along a long barn ridge is a classic Pennsylvania farm look for a reason: it breaks up the expanse and adds rhythm to the roofline.
If you go this route, size each cupola using roughly the same rule, but divide your visual attention: three 30-inch cupolas will read very differently (and often better) than one 60-inch giant.
