The last week of December is a good time for reflection and looking ahead to the future. As we prepare to enter the New Year, Valley Forge Cupolas would like to take a moment to thank all of our customers - both new and returning - who purchased a cupola or weathervane from us this past year. You helped to make 2017 one of our best years, and we are excited to see what 2018 holds for us.

2017 Was a Great Year - Thanks to You!

Here are a few reviews from our highly-satisfied 2017 customers:

“Professional, knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with!  Prompt delivery and outstanding quality.  Very responsive to questions and follow-up.  Will recommend to friends and family.  Well done Rick and Beverly!!” - Nancy & Jim Schiemer

“Excellence!  Service was very fast.  Responsiveness to emails was excellent.
Beverly made great suggestions.  The cupola looks perfect and the price was great.
I wouldn't go to anyone else for a cupola.  (And I'm really picky).” - Robin Viola

“We were in a measured rush to put a new roof on our house before the first snow, and decided to add a little architectural interest to our cottage by adding a cupola and weathervane.  We searched extensively on-line and found Valley Forge Cupolas.  Their pictures and videos on-line were very helpful.  Beverly was also a great resource.  We sent her pictures of our cottage, and some measurements, and she helped us pick the right size.  We were very pleased with the quality and delivery, and our new roof looks great topped off with this gorgeous copper top cupola and weathervane.  We got all installed the day before the first snow hit!” - Tracy Milano

“This is my third weathervane as when I moved, the movers kept [the last one].  I searched the web for three days then found Valley Forge Cupolas and Weathervanes.  I called and had a lot of help [from] Beverly who helped me select the hunting dog which really resembles my golden retriever.  It arrived yesterday and I was surprised at the quality and workmanship.  It looks beautiful on my roof.  Would highly recommend this company.” - Betty Alcorn

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, which means winter weather will soon be in full swing. Whether or not you’re in for a white Christmas, if you own farm animals you know the importance of having a warm, secure barn to give them shelter when the outdoors turns into a winter wonderland. But maintaining proper ventilation in your barn is key to ensuring the health of your animals and preventing the growth of mildew and rot. Cupolas are the perfect way to keep healthy, fresh air flowing through your barn without losing heat. Here are some pictures of cupolas on barns to give you inspiration for your barn.

Deck the Halls with a Cupola for Your Barn

Picture
This elegant cedar barn is sporting a 60” Carlisle cupola with arched windows. Silver and gold have nothing on the beautiful combination of copper and Western red cedar in this cupola!
Picture
For long rooflines you can choose between one large cupola and two smaller cupolas. The 62’ barn above is adorned with two 36” arched louver cupolas with concave copper roofs. Topping off the cupolas is a lovely weathervane depicting a running horse, perhaps practicing to take his owner on a winter sleigh ride!
Picture
This “L” shaped barn is perfect for a configuration of three 30” Norwood cupolas. The copper roofs have standing seams, adding extra definition and character to the graceful lines. These cupolas also have small windows above the louvers, allowing natural light into the barn while providing much needed ventilation.

Our cupolas can easily be painted to match your barn, as shown here with this 42” Morton cupola. Why “make do” with a cupola when you can design a custom cupola that exactly matches your style and needs? Our cupola specialists are happy to help you design the cupola of your dreams.

This sturdy barn isn’t afraid to let it snow! With twin 30” cedar board and batten louver cupolas providing a cohesive look, this gorgeous barn is ready to weather any storm. With one phone call to the specialists at Valley Forge Cupolas, this can be the last Christmas your barn goes without a cupola.

How Much Does a Cupola Cost?

Picture
One of the first questions our customers ask is, “How much does a cupola cost?” The cost of a cupola depends on several factors, including its size and how much customization goes into its construction. Some companies offer “discount” cupolas that are made from substandard materials and shoddy craftsmanship, but a cupola doesn’t have to break the bank to have quality. At Valley Forge Cupolas, our cupolas are always made from durable, high-quality materials and exquisite craftsmanship. And this week we are running a special on our most popular model, the CNC Window Cupola.

Meet the Star of Our Collection: the CNC Window Cupola

With a beautiful design that complements any structure, it is easy to see why the CNC Cupola is so popular with our customers. Available in sizes from 18”-60” wide, it can accomodate roofs spanning 15-48 feet. This allows you to add matching cupolas to your home, garage and shed.

The smaller sizes (up to 28” width) feature four windowpanes per side, while the larger sizes boast six windowpanes per side. The windows can even be opened to add a light to your cupola. Cupola lighting is another great way to add character and dimension to your home.

The CNC Window Cupola offers a variety of options, including:
  • Straight or concave roof
  • Arched or straight windows
  • Polished or antique (patinated) finish on the copper roof
  • Azek vinyl or rustic Western Red Cedar
Azek vinyl is guaranteed not to crack, split, warp, yellow or flake. Combined with a durable copper roof, you have a maintenance-free product that will last decades. And the prices simply can’t be beat, starting at $329 for the 18” model! For these low prices you get a high-quality product, outstanding craftsmanship and unbeatable customer service.

On the 1st Day of Christmas My True Love Gave Me: A House Cupola

12/8/2017

Giving gifts is notoriously hard, as the gentleman in the classic Christmas carol “The 12 Days of Christmas” learned. Combined, he gave his sweetheart a staggering amount of gifts - including 42 swans, 36 calling birds, and 40 dairy cows - that would set him back $34,558.65 this year. (We hope he also gave her a lot of aspirin to deal with the noisy animals!)

If you struggle with finding the perfect gift for your loved one, we offer a less expensive and complicated solution: a house cupola! The perfect complement to any roofline, cupolas are easy to install, built from durable materials, and fun to decorate for the holidays. With dozens of styles and customization options to choose from, you are certain to find a gift your sweetheart will love.

A Very Merry Selection of House Cupolas

This clever design gives the illusion of shutters and the benefits of louvers. The window is also the perfect size for one of our beautiful cupola lanterns - far better than a partridge in a pear tree!
Picture
Trade in the turtledoves for a pair of beautiful, arched louvers. Simple, functional, and elegant, the Hartford matches any architectural design easily. And for long rooflines, you can choose a pair of smaller, matching cupolas rather than one large one.

Who needs golden rings when you have beautiful, shiny copper? This exquisite cupola features a bell-shaped roofline, whose outline is mimicked in the molding over the windows.

For the nautical-loving sweetheart, skip the geese and swans and choose this cupola, instead. The flared, shiplap base complements any seaside home, while the domed roof and large windows are reminiscent of lighthouse design.

This magnificent louver cupola is happy to preside over your roof. Adding much-needed ventilation, louver cupolas help regulate heat and humidity in your attic, turning it into useable space. Say, for a lords and ladies’ dance party?

While your neighbors may not appreciate 12 drummers playing at all hours of the night, they will love admiring your new cupola! Be the envy of your neighborhood with a cupola that adds personality and style to your home.

We also have beautiful weathervanes to top your cupola, from cows and doves to ships and lighthouses, and everything in between. Call us today at 866-400-1776 to order your sweetheart’s gift today!

Ask the Cupola Experts: What is Patina?

12/1/2017

Picture
A question we often hear from customers is, “What is patina?” The term ‘patina’ refers to the blue-green layer that forms on the surface of copper over time, much like rust develops on iron. Unlike rust, however, patina actually preserves the copper, protecting it from the elements. This process occurs naturally but can also be man-made to ensure a uniform color.

Perhaps the most famous patinated landmark is the Statue of Liberty. The copper covering Lady Liberty is 3/32 of an inch (less than the thickness of two pennies) and has developed a beautiful, light green patina over the 131 years it has stood in New York Harbor. Gorgeous patinas can also be seen on the Canadian Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, the Peckham Library in London, and the NEMO Science Center in Amsterdam.

What Determines the Color of the Patina?

The ultimate color of the patina is determined by the corrosive elements it is exposed to. For example, continued exposure to sulfurs and oxides creates copper sulphate, which has a distinctive blue color. In saltwater environments, the patina may contain copper chloride, which is green. Before it takes on these colors, however, the copper will change from its original golden red to gradually darker shades of brown.

When Will Patina Develop?

The development and ultimate color of patina is determined by several variables, including temperature, humidity and precipitation, length of exposure, chemical environment, and the surface condition of the copper. However, environments generally produce patina in a predictable manner:
  • Salt water environments: 7-9 years
  • Industrial environments: 5-8 years
  • Urban environments: 10-14 years
  • Clean environments: up to 30 years

Can I Prevent Patina?

Except for controlled environments, there is no way to prevent the development of patina. Since cupolas and weathervanes are exposed to the elements, they will develop patina over time. However, if you are worried that you will not like the resulting patina, you can choose to have us patina the copper for you. This will ensure an even, uniform color on the copper.

For Beautiful Copper Call Valley Forge Cupola and Weathervanes

Our cupolas, weathervanes, mailboxes and lampposts all use durable, 24-gauge copper. Whether you choose a shiny or patina finish, the copper will withstand the elements for decades to come.
