What Does A Cupola Do For Your Home?

Cupolas are easily recognized as beautiful architectural focal points on a roofline, but what does a cupola do? Cupolas offer numerous benefits to any structure, from improved ventilation to increasing the usable space inside a home. As cupola specialists, we love sharing with our customers all the ways a cupola can benefit your home.

4 Things a Cupola Can Do

  1. Improve ventilation - This is perhaps the most important function of a cupola. Moisture is one of the biggest dangers to any structure. It can weaken roofs, damage electrical systems, and destroy insulation. High moisture levels can also lead to mold growth, which poses a health risk to people and livestock and damages stored items. That is why nearly all barns have cupolas, to allow moist air and fumes to escape, protecting the health of the animals inside. In a garage or shed, cupolas help eliminate odors and fumes, reduce heat, and prevent carbon monoxide build-up.
  2. Let the light in - Cupolas are a wonderful way to add natural light into a space. Window cupolas allow sunlight to brighten up a room or attic, reducing the need for electric light and creating a more inviting space. You can also hang a lantern in a cupola to illuminate your home at night, keeping your home bright and cheery.
  3. Beautify a home or garage - Cupolas are a great way to add beauty and character to a home. They can enhance or highlight an architectural theme, or be used to form a cohesive look around your property by adding them to sheds, gazebos, detached garages, or other outbuildings. They can also help set the tone for your home. Add a shiplap base and pineapple weathervane to create a beach cottage theme, or choose barn red painted steel and a traditional rooster weathervane for a farmhouse look. And with endless customization options, we can help you design the perfect complement to your home.
  4. Add more usable space - Because cupolas provide ventilation and light, they can help convert attics, garages and sheds into workrooms or quiet retreats. Natural light is soothing to both you and your electric bill, and increased ventilation allows heat and fumes to escape while keeping the air circulating, creating a more comfortable work environment inside sheds and garages. Now you can have the perfect potting shed for your garden or workshop for your tools!

Improve Garage Roof Ventilation with a Cupola

2/7/2020

Picture
Garage roof ventilation is important because garages are almost constantly closed, only briefly opening to take out a vehicle, bicycle, lawnmower, trash can, etc. Without fresh air circulation, garages can become stagnant and experience a build-up of heat and odors. Some homeowners raise the garage door a few inches to get more air flow, but this allows animals and dirt to get inside the garage and also compromises your home's security. Cupolas are a great and aesthetically pleasing way to add much needed ventilation to your garage.

The Benefits of Garage Roof Ventilation

  • Eliminates odors and fumes - Garages can be home to everything from trash cans and deep freezers to paint and cleaning chemicals. These items create unpleasant and, in some cases, potentially dangerous odors and fumes. In an attached garage, fumes from paint, pesticides, chemicals and other toxins can seep into the house if not properly vented. A roof vent draws these fumes out of the garage and replaces them with fresh air, keeping the air at a healthy level.
  • Prevent carbon monoxide build-up - Carbon monoxide is a colorless, tasteless, odorless gas produced by burning gasoline, propane, and other fuels. It is most commonly found in car exhaust, but it is also produced by lawnmowers, generators, and space heaters. Running any of these items inside a poorly ventilated garage - even briefly - can lead to a dangerous build-up of carbon monoxide. Since carbon monoxide is heavier than the air, it is a good idea to lift the garage door a few inches while carbon monoxide-producing items are in use. Combined with garage roof ventilation, this helps create an efficient air flow system that draws in fresh air and pushes the carbon monoxide out.
  • Reduces heat - During summer, the temperatures inside a garage can soar to extreme levels. This extreme heat can not only damage chemicals and other items stored in your garage, it can radiate through common walls into the interior of your home, driving up cooling costs and putting a strain on your A/C system. Adding garage roof ventilation allows heat and humidity to escape, keeping both your garage and living spaces cooler and more comfortable.

Cupolas Add Garage Roof Ventilation

Cupolas are a stylish, easy way to add ventilation to a garage roof. Available in a variety of sizes and styles to complement any home, our garage cupolas are made from high-quality materials and are 100% built in the USA by Pennsylvania craftsmen. Have a custom design in mind? Our cupola specialists are happy to make your cupola dreams come true! Call Valley Forge Cupolas today at 866-400-1776.
