Ring in the New Year With a Custom Cupola

12/22/2016

The New Year is traditionally a time for new beginnings. The most popular and perennial resolutions focus on positive life changes, such as losing weight and quitting smoking. Unfortunately, a third of us will have broken our resolutions by the end of January! So why not invest in a change that will last for decades? With a custom cupola from Valley Forge Cupolas and Weathervanes, you can add a new look to your home for less than the cost of a yearly gym membership!

Benefits of a Custom Cupola

Picture
  • A home makeover that is cheaper than renovations - Upgrading your home is often a costly endeavor. With basement and kitchen remodels averaging between $10,000-$60,000, and even a simple bathroom remodel running $2,600-$20,000, it’s no wonder homeowners often put off changes to their home. Not to mention these renovations take an average of 4-6 weeks! Who wants to live without a kitchen or bathroom for a month or longer? But with the simple addition of a custom cupola, your home gains elegance and personality for a fraction of the cost - and a lot less effort and inconvenience! Our cupolas can be installed in just a few hours by a handyman or contractor.
  • Accent and highlight your home’s existing architecture - Cupolas can be customized to complement your home’s architectural features, from molding to window style to roof shape.
  • Cupolas last for decades with minimal maintenance - Made from durable materials - including copper, red cedar, and maintenance free Azek vinyl - our cupolas will withstand all that Mother Nature has to offer with little to no effort on your part.
  • Form and function – Cupolas can bring light and ventilation into your home with their windows and/or louvers. Window cupolas on a garage provide natural, ambient light, reducing your reliance on electric lighting. Adding a louvered cupola above your attic space helps increase air circulation, sending moist air outside and reducing the risk of mildew and rot.
  • See your cupola before purchasing - With our custom digital quotes, you can see exactly how a cupola will look on your roof, taking the guesswork out of shopping. We have over 15 years of cupola design experience, and we love sharing our expertise with our customers. We will help you through every step of the design process, making sure your cupola is the perfect complement to your home and style.

Save Big on Cupolas Before the New Year!

Celebrate the New Year with Thematic Weathervanes

12/22/2016

Choose your new weathervane with inspiration from New Year’s traditions from around the world.
New Year’s is right around the corner, with people around the world gearing up for celebrations.

We are familiar with our own American New Year’s traditions (watching the ball drop, popping champagne, kissing at midnight), but other countries around the world have varied and wonderful New Year’s traditions that may surprise you.
Picture
Spain

The Spanish eat 12 grapes just before midnight on New Year’s Eve: one for each month in the coming New Year. This is thought to bring good fortune and prosperity in the coming year. Add a symbol of prosperity to your home with our beautiful wine bottle weathervane, featuring a cluster of grapes and wine glasses atop each directional.

Picture
The Netherlands

On New Year's Eve, the Dutch bring their (undecorated) Christmas trees out into the streets and use them to light bonfires. These fires are thought to purge the old and greet the new. Our beautiful, patina pine tree weathervane evokes thoughts of wooded hills and winter all year long. Perfect for a cabin or mountain retreat!

Picture
Brazil

In Rio de Janeiro they celebrate “Festa de Iemanjá” as part of their New Year celebrations. This is celebrated predominantly and faithfully by the local fishermen. Lemanjá is the Brazilian Goddess of the Sea and the Mother of Waters. They pay tribute to her and seek her blessings by sending small boats onto the sea bearing gifts such as flowers, perfume, combs, jewelry, rice, cosmetics, or colorful candles. Bring good luck to your coastal home with our elegant mermaid weathervane.

Picture
Romania

The Bear Dance is a popular Romanian custom used to ring in the New Year. People wear bear masks - the iconic animal of Romanian forests - to participate. This dance is believed to scare away everything that is evil. Our copper bear weathervanes will stand guard over your home year round.

Picture
Belgium

Belgium used to be a primarily agrarian culture, making cattle people’s most prized possessions: healthy flocks meant better farming and a more prosperous New Year. This led to the “Whispering to the Cattle” tradition. Citizens whisper good wishes to their cattle to usher in the New Year, believing their prosperity stemmed from the wellbeing and happiness of their cattle. Our dairy cow weathervane (available in polished or patina finish) is perfect for cattle farmers.

Picture
Ireland

Weathervanes are very important in Irish New Year’s celebrations: at midnight, people check the direction the wind is blowing to determine their luck for the coming year. A west wind predicts good fortune for the New Year, while an easterly wind means to expect British intervention in the coming year. Other places believe a Southerly wind means fine weather and prosperity, while a North wind predicts a year of bad weather. We have several traditional weathervanes to help you monitor the changing wind throughout the year.

Dozens of Weathervanes to Choose from at Valley Forge Cupolas and Weathervanes

Cupolas vs. Domes: Why Your Roof Needs a Cupola

12/15/2016

Learn the differences between domes and cupolas and why cupolas are the better choice for your home.
Picture
If you are looking to add architectural flair to your home, you may have come across conflicting recommendations for cupolas versus domes. It can be difficult to decide between the two, especially since the terms “cupola” and “dome” are often used interchangeably. Today we’ll take a closer look at them both to help you better understand their differences and relative benefits.

In architectural terms, domes are circular and have a rounded roof resembling the upper half of a sphere. Some of the most famous domes in the world can be found on St. Basil's Cathedral in Russia. Conversely, cupolas are square or octagonal in shape and can often be found on top of domes, serving as belfries, lanterns, or look-outs - such as the cupola atop the dome of the U.S. Capitol building.
Picture
Due to their design, domes are actually self-supporting and contain no interior supports, offering large open areas. Their main goal is to provide open space, and they don’t necessarily offer extra light or ventilation. They can also be difficult to incorporate into existing structures. Depending on the size of the dome, you may need a contractor to make modifications to your roof before the dome can be safely installed. Additionally, domes work best with flat roofs and are not easily placed on traditional sloped roofs.

Cupolas are simple to install on any style roof and require minimal alterations to your roofline. Their primary goal is to add light and ventilation to your home, garage, or other buildings, all the while adding beauty to your roofline. Our cupolas are easily customized to complement your home and are backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee. Cupolas offer beauty and function for a fraction of the cost of a dome.

From businesses to barns, our cupolas are crafted with care and durable, long-lasting materials. When you invest in a cupola, you are adding value to your home and enhancing its appearance for years to come.

This beautiful home is visually anchored by two 30” vinyl “CNC Window” cupolas on either end. The cupola lighting adds a warm cheery glow to the home and causes the copper roofs to shine. We recommend two or more cupolas for larger homes to keep things balanced. And you get twice the beauty!

In this before and after photo, you can see how cupolas even add elegance to stand-alone garages. The copper roof pops beautifully against the leafy green backdrop and makes the structure appear more balanced.

The cupola on this home blends seamlessly with the existing architecture. The white vinyl sides and black aluminum roof complement the home’s color scheme. The straight windows of the CNC cupola also match the large, beautiful windows on the home. The cupola is topped with a 39” “Morgana” finial for an elegant touch.

This stunning 30” custom “Bethany” cupola creates an eye-catching focal point on this carport. With matching trim and an elegantly curved copper roof, your eye is immediately drawn to its bright silhouette by the arch below it. And this cupola also demonstrates the beauty that a carefully chosen and coordinated weathervane can add to a building. (We have a whole selection of weathervanes in a variety of colors, styles, and themes that can be added to any cupola.)

Cupola Lighting:  Decorating Your Cupola for the Holidays

This season, cupola lighting and decor can put your holiday display over the top!

For many people, as soon as the Thanksgiving table is cleared, they’re hauling out the Christmas decorations. Decorating the outside of your home for Christmas is a tradition that many people take seriously, striving to outdo their neighbors’ displays (just browse “Christmas light display” on YouTube). While some people enjoy pulling a Clark Griswold and lighting up the whole neighborhood, others look for simple ways to add a festive flare to their homes. This season, cupola lighting and decor can put your holiday display over the top!

Dress Up Your Cupola for the Holiday

Wreaths - Advent wreaths were first introduced by German Lutherans during the 16th century, using candles and evergreens to celebrate the season of advent. These eventually grew into Christmas wreaths designed to be hung on doors and in windows to herald the coming of Christmas. What better backdrop for a beautiful Christmas wreath than your cupola?

Garland - Evergreens have been standard holiday decoration fare for centuries, and not just when twisted into wreaths. Framing your cupola with evergreen garlands is certain to add a festive feel - especially if you wrap lights around the garland!

Lanterns - One of the best types of cupola lighting is lanterns. We have a dozen styles to complement any window cupola or architectural design.
  • Our bronze Surrey lantern evokes the feel of Dickens-era London.
  • The bronze Lanai lantern is shaped like a jeweled pineapple, the Hawaiian symbol of welcome, friendship, and hospitality.
  • Get a futuristic feel with our copper Onion lantern, which looks like something to be found in Nikola Tesla’s workshop.
  • The beautiful patina on our Old Colony lantern is a wonderful accent to your home’s decor.
  • Our Colonial lanterns add charm in both black and white with stunning copper roofs.
  • The simple, timeless black lines of our Lexington lantern will never go out of style.
Christmas lights - Outlining your home - including your cupola - in Christmas lights can transform it into a magical Gingerbread cottage. If you choose white “icicle” lights, they can make your home look like it was kissed by Jack Frost all winter long.

Laser lights - The newest trend in home and cupola lighting is laser lights. If you’ve found yourself wrestling with a snarl of traditional string lights year after year, this unique lighting option might be for you. Make your cupola stand out in your neighborhood with a tasteful laser light projector!
