Copper Cupolas Make a Great Addition to Any Roofline

When it comes to high-quality building materials, copper and cupolas are a match made in heaven. Copper cupola roofs and accent pieces act as a beautiful crown to your home, lasting for decades with little to no maintenance. This lightweight yet flexible material is extremely durable and easily shaped for elegant, practical designs.

Why We Love Copper Cupolas

Copper can be incorporated into as much - or as little - of a cupola design as you wish. Copper cupola roofs are the most popular, and typically come in straight, concave, and bell-shaped designs. You can also use copper for the base, as trim or drip rail molding, or as an insert for the star cutout on our Designer Series cupolas. You can even construct a cupola entirely from copper!

Copper looks great when paired against any building material, including cedar and vinyl. Because copper is easy to shape, you can create unique designs such as the standing seam roof on this Carlisle cupola. Pairing a standing seam roof with a board and batten base would add beautiful lines to your home!

Our copper cupolas are available both polished and with patina. Patina is the blue-green layer that forms on the surface of copper over time, much like rust develops on iron. Unlike rust, however, patina actually preserves the copper, protecting it from the elements. If patina develops naturally, its ultimate color will be determined by the corrosive elements it is exposed to (such as salt air). The color of the patina and how long it takes to develop will be unique to the environment. Man-made patina offers the same protective coating with a more uniform color distribution.
If you prefer the look of polished copper, you can either routinely clean the copper or, for more effective results, seal the copper. Copper cupola accents, such as weathervanes or finials, are easier to clean than large areas of copper, such as roofs or bases.

Tips on Adding a Cupola to a House

At Valley Forge Cupolas and Weathervanes, there’s nothing we love more than helping our customers find the perfect cupola. As a family owned and operated business, our hands-on, personalized customer service is what sets us apart from other cupola manufacturers. We share our decades of cupola knowledge with our customers to help you choose the cupola that meets all your needs and specifications. If you’ve been thinking about adding a cupola to a house here are some tips from the experts!

Adding a Cupola to a House Checklist

  1. Choose whether your cupola will be functional or decorative - Cupolas fall into two categories, depending on their end use. A cupola that sits on top of a roof and is just for aesthetic value is considered decorative. If your cupola installation requires cutting a hole in the roof so that the cupola provides ventilation or light, it is considered functional. While this distinction doesn’t affect the construction of the cupola itself, it will help you decide which features are most important to you.
  2. Consider your materials - At Valley Forge Cupolas, our cupolas are constructed from only the finest, high-quality materials. These include Azek vinyl, Western Red Cedar, copper, and steel. Azek vinyl is easily painted to match your home, and our steel roofs come in a variety of colors to complement any building. You can add copper accents to your cupola, such as trim, molding, or a copper base, and it can be patinated to a beautiful blue-green.
  3. Determine the size of your cupola - As a general rule, the width of a cupola’s base should be 1.25” for every foot of unbroken roof ridge line. This gives you a range of sizes to choose from: for example, a 24’ roof could accommodate a cupola as small as 30” wide and as large as 36” wide. The final size will be determined by both the overall size of your house, your personal preference, and the height of the cupola. When choosing the height of your cupola, you must consider pitch, width, and height of your home. Picturing a cupola on your home can be difficult, but our Cupola Specialist, Beverly, can provide you with a digital quote and show you exactly how the cupola will look so that you can choose the size and height you desire.
  4. Choose your accents - From shiplap bases and star cut-outs to dentil molding and standing seam roofs, there are dozens of custom features to choose from. Whether you need to match the trim design of your garage doors or the cedar shingles of your roof, our design experts are here to help. We love helping our customers create custom cupolas that perfectly match their homes!

Tucked among rolling hills or rising from the flat plains, barns are more than a simple building: they are the heartbeat of your home. What better way to crown these important structures than with a beautiful copper weathervane? Barns and weathervanes pair perfectly together as they are both a rich part of American history. Here are some of our favorite weathervanes for barns!
Picture
New to our weathervane collection are these gorgeous Black Accent Weathervanes! Fashioned after early American designs, this chunky stallion is ready to race along your roofline. Available in two sizes, this weathervane can accommodate barns of any size.
Picture
This is the only fox we’ll allow near the henhouse! With its nose in the wind, this graceful, sly creature is always looking for adventure. Fully three dimensional, this eye-catching creature easily displays wind direction even on a tall roof.
Picture
Let this trio of geese take flight over your barn! With three distinct birds, this beautifully detailed weathervane is perfect for larger buildings. Whether you’re a birdwatcher or an avid hunter, you’ll enjoy seeing these shiny birds winging their way home.
Picture
If you prefer a more traditional style weathervane for your barn, this exquisite large 3-D Arrow lends a truly majestically stylish feeling wherever it sits. Reminiscent of Victorian styles, this weathervane harkens back to the days when archers perched on castle walls used wind vanes to determine wind direction.
Picture
Show jumping is an equestrian tradition beloved the world over. This elegant horse and rider weathervane is perfect for both equestrian riders and those who breed champion jumpers. With its intricately detailed features, it looks as though it may ride right off your roof!
Picture
This bold, 3D ram means business! Rams are male bighorn sheep, known for settling arguments by ramming each other with their impressive horns. This ram will keep watch over your flocks as he struts his stuff above your barn.
Picture
Traditionally, weathervanes for barns have depicted the owners’ most well-known animals, such as a prize-winning bull. Our 3D bull is a specimen sure to win a few blue ribbons! This bulky beast takes his protective role seriously, head down, ready to charge any invaders.
Picture
Fresh from the county fair, this little piggy will oink his way into your heart and onto your roof. Our portly porker is perfect for any barn, coop, or sty. With high-quality materials and construction, no wolves are going to blow this piggy away!

The cow is one of the oldest American weathervane designs and can still be seen on dairy barns throughout the country. Bring this faithful milker home to keep watch over your barn and fields today!
