When it comes to matching a cupola to your home, the shape and color of the roof helps tie the cupola into the rest of the building. Metal roof cupolas offer durability, elegance, and a variety of finishes and colors to complement any home. You can choose one of our stock designs, or build your own custom cupola to meet your exact needs.

Metal Roof Cupolas: Aluminum, Copper, and Painted Steel

When it comes to metal roofs for cupolas, aluminum likely isn’t the first metal that springs to mind. However, aluminum offers numerous benefits, including in hot or seaside environments. Aluminum is an excellent reflector of heat: during the summer, it can reflect over 90% of the sun’s rays, helping to keep your attic space cooler. In the winter, the aluminum reflects heat back into the house to mitigate radiant cooling. Aluminum is also much lighter than steel and copper, making it easier to install.

When it comes to durability, aluminum can last for years without showing much wear and tear. It can withstand extreme weather and does not warp, crack, or rust. If you live in an area that experiences acid rain or has salty air, aluminum will maintain its good looks longer than copper or steel.

By far the most popular roofing choice, copper adds a brilliant pop to any roofline and is one of the longest-lasting metals. That is because as copper ages it develops a beautiful patina (the bluish-green hue) on its surface. However, unlike rust on steel, patina does not damage the copper. Instead, it acts as a protective barrier between the copper and the elements. The development and ultimate color of patina is determined by several variables, including temperature, humidity and precipitation, length of exposure, chemical environment, and the surface condition of the copper. That is why some customers choose a copper roof that is already patinated to ensure a uniform color. If you prefer to preserve the brilliant shine of your copper roof, there are sealants that will help keep a patina from developing or you can clean the copper regularly.

Steel is one of the most durable building materials that - when properly sealed - can last a lifetime. Steel roofs are commonly found in areas that frequently experience high winds and strong storms as they can weather storms with minimal damage. Our Sundance Cupolas have steel roofs and bases that are available in a variety of color combinations, including:
  • Avocado Green
  • Pewter Grey
  • Slate Blue
  • Colonial Red
  • Bronze
  • Light Stone
You can view all 25 color options here. We also custom cut the bases of our Sundance cupolas to match your roof pitch, ensuring a secure fit.

Cupolas on Barns: An American Tradition

10/19/2018

Picture
There are 7 classic American barn designs, each one developed to meet the needs of their region and/or the items stored inside, whether livestock or crops. But essential to each barn’s design and construction was proper ventilation. A barn that didn’t get enough fresh air ran the risk of sick livestock, spoiled crops, and hay fires. That is why farmers started to incorporate cupolas on barns as an easy, effective way to ensure their barns could shed noxious fumes and excess heat, protecting the animals and items inside. Cupolas also help protect wooden barns from rot, mold and mildew by venting humid air, lowering the moisture level inside the barn.

Today cupolas are still an integral part of barn design, brightening up interiors, ventilating lofts, and enhancing aesthetic appeal. If you are looking to add a cupola to your barn, the cupola experts at Valley Forge Cupolas and Weathervanes are here to help. With an extensive collection of barn cupolas as well as custom design options, we can build you the perfect cupola for your barn.

Cupola on Barn Designs

When placing cupolas on barns, there are a few factors to consider: size, number, and style. When sizing a cupola, the general rule of thumb is a minimum of 1.25” for every foot of unbroken roof ridge line. However this guideline becomes more flexible with barns due to their large size and long rooflines. It is better to put two or more cupolas on barns, as shown in the diagrams below.
Picture
Picture
The number of cupolas you choose will also play a role in determining their size. If you have an even number of cupolas, it is best to keep them the same size. If you choose an odd number of cupolas, you can keep them the same size or opt for a slightly larger size in the middle. Beverly, our Cupola Specialist, can help you determine which look is best for your barn with a free digital quote. Simply send a photo or architect's rendering of your barn to [email protected] and Beverly can show you how the various options will look on your barn so that you can make a confident decision.

Lastly, you need to choose the design of your barn cupola. You can choose from one of our beautiful stock cupolas or design a custom cupola that perfectly accents your barn. With beautiful, durable materials - such as Azek vinyl, Western Red Cedar, beautifully painted steel or aluminum, and durable 24-gauge copper - and superb construction, our cupolas will last long after the cows come home.
