Are Cupolas Good for Roof Venting? Our Experts Answer

Whether you live in a cold or warm climate, proper roof ventilation is a crucial component of attics, sheds, garages, and barns. Not only does it increase the lifespan of the roof, proper ventilation also helps expel the heat, moisture and fumes that can wreak havoc on both your health and the structural integrity of the building. If you've been looking into ventilation systems, you may be wondering, "Are cupolas good for roof venting?" The answer is, yes! Cupolas are a cost-effective, easy, and fashionable way to improve the ventilation in your roof system.

Benefits of Proper Roof Venting

  • Helps reduce damaging moisture - Moisture is one of the most dangerous things to a roof system. Excessive moisture causes damage and can weaken the structural integrity of the roof. It can also lead to toxic mold growth, affecting your health.
  • Helps prevent damage to roof shingles - High heat in an attic can actually bake the shingles from underneath and cause them to prematurely age, significantly shortening the lifespan of your roof.
  • Helps save energy - Heat buildup in the attic can seep into the living spaces below, making your air conditioner work harder and longer. Proper ventilation allows your air conditioner to work more efficiently, reducing energy costs and extending the life of your HVAC system.
  • Helps prevent ice dams in winter - An ice dam occurs when snow melts on the top and middle section of a roof, only to refreeze on the eaves. This ice "dam" prevents more melting snow from draining off the roof, and that water can back up into a home, damaging walls, ceilings and insulation. With proper roof ventilation, cool outside air is exchanged for warm attic air, keeping the roof cold. This allows less snow to melt and prevents ice damming.

Are Cupolas Good for Roof Venting?

There are a wide variety of roof vents available, but because each home has a different airflow and roof design, choosing the right vent can be a tricky process. Luckily, there is one roof vent that fits any size, pitch, and style roof: cupolas! Cupolas can easily accommodate any roof, from small sheds to extra long barns. For larger roofs, placing a pair of cupolas on either end is a great way to increase ventilation and airflow, ensuring your roof system stays cool and dry.

At Valley Forge Cupolas, our cupolas are easy to install and come in a variety of sizes and designs to complement any design style. We also offer custom designs to meet your exact needs and specifications. Need a taller louver section for maximum ventilation? Or a custom base for an extra steep roof? Our cupola specialists have you covered! Simply send a photo of your building to [email protected] and we will create a digital quote so that you can see exactly how your custom cupola would look on your roof.

Not sure a cupola is the answer. My barn roof has the roofing plywood abutting at the peak (no air gap) with tar paper and shingles sealing the peak. I want to put insulation in roof but airflow behind insulation will be trapped at peak. Cupola will vent the space where it is installed but what about the other spaces between the rafter trusses not continuous with the cupola? the 2x6 trusses block flow to the cupola. Is there a way?

Are Cupolas something to consider with a cathedral ceiling hot roof (gable roof, no attic)? Thank you.

I have an large (hot in summer) attic space. The house is 92' long with full attic, 11/12 pitch above an 2nd floor with 8' ceilings. There are gable vents but inadequate. Thinking of combining (2) cupola vents with a whole house fan to cool house. There is a fireplace termination on the highest part of the roof just off set from center of that roof section and house that would have otherwise been the ideal location for another. Would like lowest profile with 11/12 pitch curved hip roof, all copper cupola (2). Prefer 24" to keep profiles down. Please contact me with questions as required. So. California inland location.
