Size is Everything
To properly complement your home and have the most impact, it is very important for cupolas to be sized properly. If the cupola is too small, it will look like an afterthought or a toy. If the cupola is too large, it will overwhelm the visual space of your roofline. A good rule of thumb is to have a minimum of 1.25” of cupola for every foot of unbroken roofline. For example, for a 24’ long roof, you would want to choose a cupola with a 30” base or larger.
For extremely long buildings – such as barns or commercial structures – you will likely want to consider multiple cupolas. A 60’ roof would call for a 72” cupola, but that would no longer look proportionate. Instead, you could install two 48” cupolas, or a pair of 30” cupolas with a 42” cupola in the middle, to create the proper harmony of design and balance. Whatever the size or type of building, from bungalow to carriage house, our designers will help you choose the size and/or combination that best complements your roof.
