Improve Your Pole Barn Ventilation with a Cupola

If you're looking to buy a pole barn or renovate an existing one, an important (but often overlooked) factor to consider is ventilation. Whether you're using your pole barn as a workshop, to house animals, or just for storage, having adequate ventilation protects the integrity of your building. Proper pole barn ventilation provides much needed air flow, helping to prevent stale air, mold and extreme temperatures.

Why is Pole Barn Ventilation Important?

Moisture is one of the biggest dangers to any structure. It can weaken roofs, damage electrical systems, and destroy insulation. High moisture levels can also lead to mold growth, which poses a health risk to people and livestock and damages stored items. Moisture can accumulate in a pole barn in two ways: humidity and condensation.

Improper ventilation makes it difficult to change the air conditions inside your pole barn. This means that if the air is humid, the humidity doesn't have anywhere to go. Excess humidity can damage equipment and cause shorts in electrical systems, as well as create unsafe working conditions when combined with high temperatures. If you live in a region that experiences high humidity, it is very important to have adequate pole barn ventilation.

Condensation occurs when warm, moist air comes into contact with cold surfaces. This is because warm air can hold more moisture than cold air. When warm air encounters cold surfaces in your pole barn, the air temperature is lowered and it cannot retain as much moisture. This moisture is released onto the surface, forming condensation. Proper ventilation helps keep the temperature in your pole barn stable, preventing condensation.

Ventilation is also important for the air quality inside your pole barn. Stale air develops when there isn't sufficient air flow, causing irritation to the eyes and throat. And without ventilation pole barns are subject to extreme temperature changes, becoming ovens in the summer and freezers in the winter.

Cupolas are the Perfect Pole Barn Ventilation

Cupolas are a classic - and classy - way to improve your pole barn's ventilation. A louver cupola draws moist, hot air out through the roof, preventing moisture build-up and increasing air flow. Our cupolas are available in a wide variety of sizes to accommodate any size pole barn. We even do custom designs to meet your specific needs, such as taller vent sections or custom bases. And what better way to top of your pole barn than with one of our beautiful copper weathervane?

For larger barns we recommend using multiple cupolas, both for aesthetics and functionality. Multiple cupolas provide  multiple ventilation points, allowing more moisture to escape and creating a more efficient air flow. For a balanced look, you can either use two cupolas of the same size on either end of the building, or two small cupolas on the end with a larger central cupola. You can see examples of our beautiful barn cupolas here!

Thanks so much for the tips on how to keep your pole barn in good shape. My sister wants to build a pole barn on her property for storage. She's been looking into having a professional come down to help her build one.
