They were first popularized in Asia around 711 A.D. to decorate pagodas and saw a resurgence in popularity during the Victorian and Gothic eras. These later designs were often based on Arthurian legends or regal symbols, such as the fleur de lis, and sometimes incorporated ornamental figures such as gargoyles, dragons, and other mythical creatures. Ornamental roof finials were originally made from stone, but eventually craftsmen transitioned to using copper because it resists corrosion and withstands the elements for decades.
