The Benefits of a Cupola Ventilation System

Proper ventilation is a key component in garages, sheds, attics, and barns. Without sufficient fresh air, heat, moisture, and fumes can wreak havoc on both your health and the structural integrity of the building. Adding a cupola ventilation system is a fast, fashionable, and affordable way to improve the ventilation of a structure.

Cupolas Keep Your Garage Well Ventilated

In the average household, garage doors are opened briefly and infrequently, limiting fresh air circulation. This causes the garage interior to stagnate as temperatures swing between high and low extremes. The summer heat and winter cold radiate through the walls and into living spaces, raising your energy bills as your air conditioner and heater take on the extra load. If your garage functions as a workshop, these extreme temperatures can also interfere with the usability of the space. In an attached garage, carbon monoxide and fumes from stored paints, pesticides, and other chemicals can even seep into your home if not properly vented.

Adding a cupola to your garage roof keeps fresh air circulating, allowing heat, humidity, and fumes to escape. You can also incorporate windows into your garage cupola to add natural light and decrease your electric use.

Keep Your Attic Cool and Dry with a Cupola Ventilation System

Your attic is much more than just storage space: it is part of your overall roof system, and proper attic ventilation is essential to the lifespan and integrity of your roof. Excessive heat in the attic can actually damage your shingles, causing them to prematurely age. During the summer, hot air from the attic can find its way into living spaces, forcing your AC units and fans to work harder and raising your electric bill. Additionally, moisture can build up in the attic, causing the roof decking to buckle, swell, and rot, compromising the integrity of your roof. It can also lead to the growth of mold and mildew, negatively impacting your indoor air quality.

Attic ventilation is also critical in winter to prevent the development of ice dams: a build-up of ice on the eaves of sloped roofs as a result of melting snow reaching the eaves and freezing there. As the snowmelt refreezes it can push roofing materials apart and allow water to infiltrate the roof system. A properly ventilated attic, however, exhausts eat and remains uniformly cool, and preventing this harmful freeze-thaw cycle.

Adding a cupola ventilation system to your roofline will help prevent damage to your roof and lower your energy costs. Depending on the length of your roof, you may opt for a single large cupola in the middle or two smaller cupolas at either end. Our cupola specialists can help you choose the right size and style cupola for your roofline.
