The Right Cupola Proportions Make All the Difference

A cupola that is too large will overwhelm your roofline, while too small a cupola looks like an afterthought.

Balance is the Key to Cupola Proportions

The general rule of thumb for sizing is a minimum of 1.25” of cupola for every foot of unbroken roof ridge line. This does allow for some variation, as shown in the picture below. For example, for a 24’ roof, a 30” cupola is the proper size, but sizing up slightly to a 36” cupola also produces a desirable look. You can also see how an undersized cupola looks out of place on the roofline.

For longer rooflines, it is often advised to choose multiple, smaller cupolas - rather than one, large central cupola - in order to maintain a balanced look. This can be achieved in one of two ways:

• Place two cupolas of equal size on either end of the roof, or
  
• Choose three cupolas - one slightly larger, central cupola and two smaller, flanking cupolas
  

On a 60’ roof, this would come out to two 36” cupolas, or one 42” and two 32” cupolas.
